Her Majesty's Government, I feel assured, when such a state of things is represented will not be satisfied to carry on operations at the cost of the lives of its servants. The post which I fill is not of an ordinary class. It requires attention, method, knowledge, and ability. The sudden illness, or the absence (as is the case at present) of the Registrar, throws all the duties of this office on the Deputy Registrar, who therefore must be in person skilled and competent to undertake the responsibilities of that Office. and probity

I leave it therefore in the hands of His Excellency, to whom I request this communication to be submitted, to say whether Three hundred and fifty pounds per annum, under all the circumstances I have mentioned, is a
sufficient recompense for a qualified officer in my post.
