On the 16 February last His Excellency Sir John Bowring, in the capacity of Governor of this Colony, was pleased to address a despatch to the Secretary of State for the Colonies, on the subject of a correspondence between His Excellency and myself, on the obvious question of my ability, as a barrister, to act in cases where my capacity as Attorney General might afterwards become involved. The case which gave rise to the present difficulty was one in which I had filed an information against a person in the Court, in the course of a cause, and desired to cross-examine an adverse witness, for the purpose of fixing upon him what appeared to me to be a very glaring perjury.
On that occasion His Excellency was pleased to direct the then Acting Colonial Secretary, the Rt Honble the Earl of Stanhope...
