First time from that paper as this but one opinion in the succulent print, 'to the publicity of that suspension!
You will also perceive, that I did not fail at the instant of this gross breach of confidence or not of an Oath of Office, - for I must not suppose it to have been preordained by the Governor, to draw the attention of His Excellency to the circumstance.
Letter of yesterday will show. But that Sir John Bowring thought proper to instruct the Acting Colonial Secretary, in reply, to inform me (No. 502. 20. Aug. 1858) that the (i.e. Bridges) had received instructions from "His Excellency, merely to acknowledge its receipt, and to authorise no correspondence on the subject of my suspension, until the pleasure of H.M. Government be known. It is right, Sir, that you should also be told, in connection with this most deplorable fact, that, on the 12th
one week before, there appeared the very not unjust puff in the same newspaper, which I here extract. We understand that a despatch, from Sir Edward Bulwer Lytton, the new Colonial Secretary, very complimentary to Mr. Bridges, has been addressed to the Governor ;- and at a time, when so determined a disposition has been manifested, to depreciate the services of a meritorious official it must be a satisfaction for him to know, that these services are properly valued, in the highest quarter.
Duplicate No. 2. of this letter will be forwarded by the outgoing mail, directly through the Postoffice.
It will be accompanied with Copies of my correspondence with Mr. Bridges, referred to above, including of course the China Mail, by way of Appendix.
And I trust, Sir, that, even this Exultatory shall withhold this Duplicate of the same letter, the less condescend to consult the [which have] you office, and the papers annexed to it.
I have the honor to be,
(23rd Aug. 1858)
Your most obedient and humble Servant,
F. Chisholm Anstey.
Date the 21st instant.
To
The Right Honorable Sir Edward Bulwer Lytton Bart.
Her Majesty's Principal Secretary of State for the Colonies
