Myself, hers and a large family at home and I have had, furthermore, to pay a bailiff (difficult even to be procured except when pressingly employed) for assisting me in subpoenaing 76 witnesses for the present Criminal Sessions and I had also to hire a bailiff at the last sessions.
It is now a month since I entered on my Sheriff's duties and the fees received by me have not during that period averaged Two dollars a week, and I therefore enter upon my duties with little hope of assistance from it.

I must therefore most respectfully beg of you to represent to his Excellency to simplify my duties and to Enlarge my means to a scale in some degree commensurate with my necessary expenses and the usual standard of official Salaries. What I feel to be absolutely necessary for my support and the due performance of my public duty is provision on the part of Government of at all events one efficient Clerk to relieve me.
