Commodore Armstrong is lying here with the Steam Frigate "San Jacinto" and sloop "Levant", while on the above date Her Majesty's Brig "Nancy" was the only British man of war in the Port.

I accordingly addressed Commodore Armstrong in the enclosed letter, and received his acquiescence in the letter also enclosed.

Her Majesty's Ship "Calcutta" has now been permanently stationed here, and measures have been taken within the past few days for the fuller protection of the Harbour, but I have thought it right to report the readiness with which the American commander-in-chief acceded to my request.

I beg to mention that the number of United States Merchants settled in the Colony is very considerable, the principal American houses in China having establishments here.
