The sentiment whose position is isolated and exposed, is one of considerable danger in the present state of affairs — being the target of a daring attack which was made 12 days ago on their premises as reported in the Gazette of 30th Ultimo. However, His Excellency, Admiral Guerin, whose Frigate, Her Britannic Majesty's Ship *Taurine*, is lying in this Harbour, voluntarily offered his service that he might be able to render, and intimated his readiness to place at my disposal 2 howitzers with 8 Artillerymen attached to each.
At my request, Admiral Guerin agreed to place a guard at Jardine's premises, and accordingly 2 howitzers, yesterday evening, with their complement of Artillerymen, and 30 armed men, including 2 Officers, or 46 men in all, were landed at Messrs Jardine's premises.
The Colonial Secretary's reply to Mr Jardine is inclosed herewith, as also my letter of thanks to Admiral Guerin.
