Mr Johnston was transferred from the Establishment of the Mauritius to that of the Superintendent in China, and he was appointed Secretary to the Chief Superintendent, the late Lord Napier, and accompanied His Lordship to China with the King's Commission, which substituted the King for the Company's Establishment in that country.
In 1834, Lord Napier having died, and Mr Davis having succeeded His Lordship as Chief Superintendent, Mr Johnston continued to be Secretary to Mr Davis.

In January 1835, the office of Chief Secretary and Treasurer to the Superintendents having become vacant, Mr Johnston was promoted to that office and succeeded Captain Elliot at the recommendation of the Blue Davis. In the same year, the office of Third Superintendent having become vacant, Johnston was further promoted to that office, the duties of which he performed until nearly the middle of 1837.
