Thus, it is clear
that all these Colonial duties were
No part of my duties under the
Foreign Office, but that they were
intrusted to me as the
most fitting person on
the spot to perform
them;
And that they
were performed by me most willingly, with
earnestness, and Conscientiously,
And, I am glad to say with success, –
Although without receiving any
Acknowledgement, compensation or
Gratuity whatever for them up to
the present moment.
It is not with a view to
any pecuniary reward that I lay the statement of these Services before you
on the present occasion,
but as the Colony of Hongkong
is prospering in a
high degree and
at the Naval and Military officers
employed during the war with
China on Separate Commands, at
the same time as myself, obtained
honors
