It is a great pity, in my opinion that you cannot remain in England and realize here the fruits of your great acquirements. But, be this as it may, there can be no question that your amiable disposition, knowledge of the world, and shrewd common sense eminently fit you for the office.

I have known Mr. Davies intimately and can bear testimony with confidence to his complete qualification for the post he is now seeking. Independently of the extent of his professional studies and experience, which have directly prepared him for its ordinary duties, I know that he has satisfactorily filled offices of great trust which imply his competence to decide questions of uncommon complication. While still pursuing his profession he has been, in the capacity of Editor and in the direction of one of the most important daily Journals in this country, a function which could only be performed with a knowledge of business and an aptitude for the conduct of affairs superadded to the mental activity required for political and literary discussion.
