The question respecting the strength of the present Store Establishment at Hong Kong having been brought to the consideration of the Secretary of State for War,

It is Lordship's inclination to believe that the number of persons employed at that station is greatly disproportioned to the amounts of work performed as it is found that at Jamaica, where the climate is not better and the business about the same, the duties are much smaller.

Especially, ... carried out with a smaller Establishment.

I have therefore the honour to request that your Lordship will be pleased to bring this matter to the notice of the Governor of Hong Kong with a view to causing an Enquiry to be instituted as to the number of persons employed in the Storekeeper's Department.

The Under Secretary of State for the Colonial Department, Downing Street.
