Through some of the recent quarterly returns of the Treasurer & find no mention of notes at all. only a list of coins - Yet this shows there was a large circulation of the O. Govt. notes. Within

The further that the Governor never countenanced this intention of receiving the notes, wards reposited them, or that they are really notes in the Treasury though not recorded. I have been of the former opinion. I think the best course would be to send out a copy of this letter to the Governor with reference to the Despatches of 1852 - (4488, 4490 & 4491) & to instruct him to
report what the existing practice with
respect to the custody of them is, in
order that fuller
information may
be given on
the subject, this practice to be adhered to pending further instructions – The Minute
