the patronage to Sir J. Bowring. The Salary of the Office is £1000. The qualifications for the place I believe to be a knowledge of criminal Law, integrity, decision of character, health and as much acquaintance with Chinese habits and the languages of China as can be procured.

Extract from despatch from Sir J. Bonham relative to the office of Magistrate, which I fear will render it a matter of difficulty to select an appropriate Successor for Mr. Hillier in this Country.

My wish & intent, be it known, there can be no objection to this Appointment then that of our Hony Royy. I should suffer losing a very Excellent public Officer at Hong Kong.

Mr. Labouchere will fill this vacancy from the List, I do not think I shall be prejudiced, in carrying out the promotion.

That you will find it quite satisfactory.

Entered 30. 2156. Hong Kong.

Letter from dag.

With reference to your letter of the 6th instant, I am directed to state for the information of the Earl of Clarendon; That Mr. Labouchere considers that he would not be justified in interfering with the promotion of Mr. Hillier, though he is sensible of the great loss to which the public Service at Hong Kong, will be subjected by his removal.
