Sir,

4 Feb/57

I am desired by Mr. Secretary Labouchere to remind you that the leave of absence granted to you by the Governor of Hong Kong expires on the 5th inst.

I am also to state that the confusion in the accounts of your Office of Treasurer of that Colony have been attributed to your absence.

MINUTE, FEB 26 1857

I have perused Mr. Machon's letter. I think as this gentleman is beyond his depth, it is better to dispense with him at once for his lack of duty.

It is unfair to mix him with those dismissed with charges of misconduct, with which he is unconnected, as being untried.
