caused the Chinese notices to be watched by the Police, and that a man was detected in the act of tearing one down - He was brought before the Magistrate, sentenced to a fine of ten Shillings or four Days' imprisonment, and to replace the notice by another copy with his own hands under the supervision of the Police. He professed himself not a rebel, or follower of the Tien-ping-wang, and assigned his motive to have been a disinclination to let his Countrymen know the truth about the affair at Canton for fear that they might endeavour to make it believed that the British Naval Forces are acting under the Tien-ping-wang's authority and with his consent.
I consider the Colony perfectly secure. Many foreigners have removed hither from Canton, and the Chinese Servants and laborers show no disposition to leave their posts, as has been the case with those in the employ of the Foreign Community at Canton.
