My intention to reconstruct three Chinese houses, each three Stories high, in Sul and let at £1, per annum, freeing Lyndhurst Terrace,

and to request that you have any further plans upon the said Queen's Gardens on the grounds that they will take away the ruins still remaining,

and to remove the same.

Requesting your early attention, I have the honor to be,

Your obedient Servant,

A. Hudson.

Surveyor General's Office

15th August 1856.

In reference to your letter of this day on the subject, I have to inform you that the ruins have been demolished, and to solicit your attention to Ordinance No. 8 of 1858,

Should you hereafter insist upon my removing the remainder of the confiscated materials, I am prepared to do so on receiving your intimation to that effect.

I have the honor to be, Sir,

Your most obedient Servant,

(Signed) William Cowper,

Acting Surveyor General.

Copy No. 2.

Captain Cooper's Letter,

16th September 1856.

I have the honor to acknowledge receipt of your letter No. 17, of yesterday's date, in which you surrender all further title to the whole of my property on Inland Lot No. 1, possession of which I resume accordingly.

I have been instructed by my legal adviser that the alleged warrant, under the authority of which you are presumed to have acted in this case, comprehended the sale of the materials as a means to defray the due charges of abating the alleged nuisance,

and as I am further informed that the work of demolition and removal was effected by the unpaid labour of Chinese convicts, I shall feel obliged by your informing me specifically under the following heads:

1stly. The actual charges, if any, incurred in the demolition of the houses in Inland Lot No. 1, and in the removal of the materials.

2ndly. Whether such materials were sold in market overt and upon due advertisement at their fair value, for the purpose of putting you into funds to defray the lawful charges incidental to the warrant.

3rdly. Whether there are any surplus proceeds of such sale over and above the charges incidental, and if so, whether you hold the same at my disposal.

I remain,

Your most obedient Servant,

(Signed) A. Hudson.
