I need hardly observe to the Committee that the Mint is at present unable to undertake any work but that of the Indian Coinage. Whether it will at any future period be so far released from pressure as to be available for the proposed coinage is a question which, if not to be now determined absolutely in the negative, is at any rate attended with such uncertainty that it would be inexpedient in my opinion to hold out to that Government any expectation that the Coinage of its bullion could be executed.
