I have perused Mr. Keenan's written request that the persons should be put on board his ship, and I must say that it was strictly and fully complied with; the persons having been sent from the bank by my order, under custody of Police,
and put on board his vessel without any undue delay — he must have reached his ship as soon as, if not sooner than his Captain and Chief Officer.
Mr. Keenan's statement, that his Counsel and his professional adviser were "driven" from this bank, must be viewed as a figure of speech — while the fact that the two gentlemen voluntarily abandoned the Defendant and left him to the "mercy" of two British Magistrates, in an open British Court, hardly exposing the liberty of a United States citizen to any very formidable peril.
I have, &c.
(Signed) W. H. Mitchell,
Acting Chief Magistrate.
I beg to return, herewith enclosed, Mr. Keenan's Letter.
