owing to the sudden increase of depth from 2 to 3 fathoms, to 3 fathoms, could certainly admit of vessels anchoring sufficiently near to include, almost at their warehouses.
It is proposed to continue this sea-wall, or in the dotted lines, to the next Eastern Beach.
The Green Island (Battery Island of the Chinese) I would propose connecting to the Shore by a Solid Mound or Break-water, and a return head to the Westward, enabling vessels to lie securely within for temporary repairs bearing down.
The disabled Junks from the dismantled Forts, would materially add to the durability of works under water, by the combination of their oxide with sand, etc.
The materials for these works of construction are immediately at hand (where the Forts on Conolon Peninsula are being destroyed and taken away for private use) and the Eastern quarries are also stored with large supplies of squared granite, which are intended for the construction of Batteries in Canton River. The expenses of any of these proposed works would be amply repaid by the charges, which would be cheerfully paid for their accommodation.
I have remarked during the course of my Survey of Hongkong (particularly when detained for the day observing at Observatory Point), that when calms have prevailed at the old or western anchorage, a moderate breeze prevails in this Strait, probably resulting from an induced current,
