referred to M.8 of 29th 28th April, and Mr. Caldwell consequently resigned, as duly reported in my Despatch No.180 of 6th July 1855.

Mr. Caldwell has since then been employed in Superintending a large Steamer, but has recently expressed himself desirous of abandoning the occupation.

He was accordingly told that his written preference to re-enter the Service would be received and considered.

His letter, dated 15th ultimo, is sent herewith.

I beg to request that Her Majesty's Government will sanction Mr. Caldwell's readmission to the public Service, as it will avoid much of the discontent and obstruction hitherto existent, and not only shall have an efficient Interpreter for the Supreme and Police Courts, but should Mr. May, either on promotion or retirement, vacate the Superintendency of Police, there will be a fit person to succeed to that appointment.

I am thoroughly convinced of the objection to Mr. Caldwell's reception into Her Majesty's Service after having formerly withdrawn from it, but I see no alternative, and have therefore...
