who happened to be known to me,

rightfully be his due.

Juan

After I shall have despatched this letter, I shall send for the man and make the necessary enquiry, and satisfy you upon that point, in a separate communication.

I beg to reply that Showe had called this morning at my house, that I put him into examination upon the point in question, and that in the presence of J. Mory, the Acting Sheriff, and a Justice of the Peace, he distinctly denied having made the statement attributed to him. I have learnt this morning for the first time, that the person who acted as Interpreter on the occasion was a young man whose imperfect knowledge of the language may have occasioned the misstatement under review. The Clerk, when competently examined, speaks distinctly as to the nature of my order.

To query my official act is to query my private honour.

I reply that my Bailiff, who, as such, has executed all the civil process of the Supreme Court for the last 12 months, and who, while I held the office of Sheriff, followed my daily footsteps, was present when the question was brought to my recollection for the first time, this morning.

Attorney-General,

Clerk to a Magistrate & Editor,
