in like manner a spurious and discreditable publicity at the hands of the same journalist, - and that, in fine, the practices imputed to the acting clerk of the Chief Justice have been precisely such as might have been anticipated from those antecedents in his former career which have long since marked him out to the distrust of the general body of Merchants. If the Colonial Treasurer, indeed, were now here, there would be no difficulty in producing the proof of an incident in the first week of my Colonial experience I would warrant that distrust, and much more than distrust, in matters of pecuniary security and credit.
