Mitchell and I sat there a long time, talking to him, and then passed out of the house and went home.
While in the Drawing Room there were no occupants but the aide to Colonel Caine, two young Gentlemen of the Diplomatic Department. Myself and my wife besides the servants, we all retired to our Rooms into which I did not enter that night.
Very truly yours,

My dear Sir,

Bow Hory. 28th May 1856.
In reply to your query, as to my opinion respecting the rumour which has gone abroad, as to your state at the Governor's dinner on 13th Inst. I have no hesitation whatever in stating that I saw nothing in your manner, or conduct which could warrant the supposition that you were in the slightest degree inebriated.
It so happened that I was seated on the opposite side of the table to you at dinner and therefore could not have failed to remark anything unusual in your Conduct. I also saw you engaged in Conversation with the Honble Storey General after the company had risen from the table, and up to the time of your leaving Government House.
My dear Sir,
The Honble The Chief Justice.
Faithfully yours,
Signed J. C. Rowland
Bar Department.
