With reference to the atrocious charge made against you by M. Chitholen Anstey, I request that I have not an opportunity of declaring upon my oath before a legal tribunal that, as far as my observation went (and having sat within two of Mr. Buckley, I had practically as good an opportunity of observing every act of your demeanour as he had), that the charge is not only not true, but not true in any degree. That next but one to Capt. ... Corner, Commanding this Garrison, and re-schmidt (in discussing this charge with me) said that you were not only not in the state so recklessly represented, but that you were perfectly sober. If this gentleman's opinion upon Mr. Anstey's charge, and left his opinion upon such a point, is entitled to at least equal consideration.
