21st May 1856.

In reply to your letter of yesterday's date I beg to state that I was dining at the Artillery mess on the evening of the 14th inst. when Mr. Anstey was present who stated publicly at the table that the Chief Justice was drunk at dinner at Dent's on the night before, and that he considered they were disgraced or words to that effect.

I remain,

Dear Sir, Yours very truly.

Signed Some thing.
