In my unofficial replies to the Governor's autograph of the 21st May, such as "I have described them ?" that is to say, did the Chief Justice behave himself noisily at table and in the "drawing room? did he twice insist on the lights being turned up at table and carry his point against the Governor's remonstrance? did he perpetrate the ludicrous and unbecoming extravagances imputed to him at the drinking of Her Majesty's health, and at the right hand of the Governor's representative? did he salute the lady in the drawing room with the vulgar clang which I have described him to have used?' and 'did I not, then rescue him to exchange the scene for the smoking room, where he would be less liable to remark!'

I apprehend, Sir, that any gentleman would have the right to refuse to answer any of these questions; - as tending quite as much to inculpate the Chief Justice as to exculpate myself; and no doubt such would be his answer. What would be the answer of a person who takes the same view of the obligations imposed by social confidence as Captain Watkins, Captain King or Captain ...
