It had not recovered, however, its elasticity then. When I was about to depart with those who followed out the Chief Justice from the meeting room, your Excellency appeared to detain me in order to express your resentment of his behaviour at the dinner, you specified respect and decorum in ordering at your official table the removal of the lights that were upon it, described the scene over it; you again, on my attempting to evade your Excellency's enquiring as to what I myself had witnessed; and you declared your opinion to be that he was intoxicated.
I quite concur in that opinion.
But I deeply lament that he has compelled me thus clearly to avow it and produce evidence in support of it. But for the Chief Justice's appeal to your Excellency's consideration on this occasion, I would have moved me to put pen to paper, to articulate my view, for the circulating or recording of the story in quarters where it will do him prejudice.
