I was drunk. As drunk as I could be and had disgraced my cloth". That on the 17th instant at a dinner given by Mr. Woodgate, Mrs. Anstey again stated that on the occasion alluded to "I was drunk and that the reason of your withdrawing me from the dinner table is because you were afraid I should commit myself". These statements and their context can be proved - the first by Captain Ting and doubtless by others - the second by Mr. Woodgate, the Honorable Capt. K. Stewart, R.N., and Captain Watkins, R.N., and no doubt also by others.

I believe Mr. Anstey to have stated more than I have written above and I have been informed that he made a similar statement to Mr. Leslie, but as yet I have not seen this gentleman. However, I have shown enough to call upon Mr. Anstey for an immediate ample and public apology.

Yours faithfully,

(Signed) H. Hulme.

His Excellency

Lir H. G. Downing,

Colonial Secretary.
