My Despatch No. 53, of 5th October 1856, reporting the inefficiency of Mr. Selby, the gentleman appointed to assist him as accountant, may be referred to on this bitter point. But I am sorry to say that since Mr. Rienzi's departure, I have discovered that his private affairs have been left in great disorder, and that, during his administration of Office, the unsettled work had rendered a demand for additional assistance.

The Members of the Railway Commission are sanguine in their expectation that matters will be readily placed on a proper footing and I have therefore had no hesitation in approving their recommendation, and sanctioning their employment, of an additional Clerk to write up the Books in arrear, and afford such general aid as may be requisite.

Mr. Mercer informs me that by the last Mail a letter from the Audit Board was received from Mr. Rienzi's address, on the subject of the Abstracts and Vouchers missing from the packet which contained the Accounts for 1853
