that the entire living is enormously augmented in the Colony in consequence of its prosperity, - that the Government house (first refused by me) was built for functional use, whose Salary was understood to be £8,000 a year; that not only the official apartments of that large Building are furnished at the public expense, while my predecessor (and myself during the first 18 months of my residence in the Colony) occupied a completely furnished house at a cost to the Colony of £600 a year.
