After this I went to the shop of a barber, surnamed Tang #, and while he was shaving me I said, "Have you heard the business of my friend Le Pashing? The barber grew very angry, and was indignant against "foreigners." "No man", said he, "should go to Victoria to do business. If a man is apprehended there by another, whoever he is, he is held to be the thief of that other; if he wishes him to live, he lives; if he wishes him to die, he dies. There is no regard to Heavenly principles. If a man stands security for him, he cannot get it!
His barber also said that all who had been apprehended were accused, but that only a few of them were really guilty.
