Recommendations of the current year (if we exclude the Large Premiums for Land sold) will be even in excess of that for 1855.
The great prosperity of the colony, whilst benefiting almost every class of the inhabitants, from the Coolie to the Merchant prince, is particularly advantageous to one class - the Public Servants. House rent and all the necessaries of life have risen in price, and this very considerably, but the salary of the public functionary, perhaps originally fixed, but at a series of reductions on that, remains not enhanced, except by allowance by illness and length of service.
