We find therefore that the revenue, taking the average, amounted during the first period to £26,840, during the bond period to £23,664, and during the third period to £37,579 - assisted by an Average Annual Grant from the Home Government of £28,966 during the first period, £17,705 during the second period, and £2,200 during the third period, it is gratifying that the general resources & prosperity of the Colony have enabled Government to dispense altogether at present with Grants from Parliament, and at the same time to pay for Public Works, which, properly speaking, belong to former years, and commence others which had been originally found necessary and estimated for as far back as 1845 and 1846. But for these and similar works the Expenditure for the past year, amounting to £40,813.11.3 would have been far less, and below the amount of revenue received; or, it is the average annual Expenditure during the above three periods: £59,212, £40,209, £37,724.
