GENERAL SIR HENRY MAITLAND-WILSON, Commander-in-Chief of the British forces in Syria on Wednesday night, broadcast an appeal to GENERAL DENTZ, French High Commissioner in Syria and Commander-in-Chief of the Vichy forces, to declare BEIRUT an open city and to evacuate it. If the appeal was rejected Gen. Wilson stated he would have no alternative but to take military measures necessary for the occupa- tion of the city.
General Wilson gave General Dentz until 5.30 o'clock yesterday morning to reply but as NO ANSWER HAD BEEN RECEIVED from the High Commissioner by that hour operations were continued in the coastal area and elsewhere RESULTING IN THE PENETRATION OF THE OUTER DEFENCES OF BEIRUT.
