HONGKONG, SATURDAY, JUNE 7, 1941:

WAR OF 1941 CANNOT BE WON AT 1914 PACE: MR. HORE-BELISHA ON THE LACK OF PREPARATION

AND ALWAYS FOR THE SAME "WE SUFFER DEFEAT AFTER DEFEAT REASON-LACK OF APPRECIATION, LACK OF PREPARATION AND IMPERFECT EXECUTION."

MR. LESLIE HORE-BELISHA, the former Minister for War in the Chamberlain Cabinet, and who is now one of the Government's chief critics, made this complaint when addressing a meeting in Edinburgh today when speaking of the withdrawal from Crete, says Reuter.

MR. HORE-BELISHA WAS CRITICAL OF THE R.A.F.'S SHARE IN THE CRETE AFFAIR DECLARING THAT THE RAF. COULD NOT BE EXPECTED TO APPRE- “CIATE THE NECESSITY FOR DIVE-BOMBERS AND GROUND STRAFFING MACHINES. Was it conceivable, he asked, that if either the land

or sea commander in Crete, had had complete control, they would not have made provision for the, necessary air support?

Complaining of what he called the narcotic of false confidence, he asserted that there was need for fresh stimulus and continued: "WE MUST WIN THIS WAR AND WE WILL BACK ANY GOVERNMENT THAT WILL GO ALL OUT TO WIN, BUT, WE CANNOT WIN THE 1941 WAR AT A 1914 PACE."

SUMMARY OF NEWS

IN A CRITICAL SPEECH in Edinburgh, Mr. Leslie Hore-Belisha, the former War Secretary, said that we could not win the 1941 war at a 1914 pace. Lack of appreciation and lack of preparation had been present in our recent defeats: Mr. Hore-Belisha made his cri- ticisms regarding the withdrawal from Crete.

A DUGOUT TRAGEDY, claiming seven-hundred lives, mainly, of" the poorer classes, is reported from Chungking. Suffocation was the cause. The people, men, women and children, had taken shelter dur- ing the night from raida.

THE AUSTRALIAN PRIME MINISTER is to make two broad- casts shortly, one concerning the Middle East situation and the other on, the speeding-up of Australia's war effort.

AFTER A LULL OF SIX WEEKS London had a daylight alert yesterday. The raiders were driven off.

THREE SUPPLY SHIPS AND AN armed trawler which had aid-

ed the German battleship Bismarck have been sunk.

THE JAPANESE CONSIDER THE Netherlands East Indies' reply as disappointing. Holland has lodged a protest to Japan.
