Cooke), H.M. aircraft-carrier FORMIDABLE (Flag Capt. Bissett), four cruisers, HMS.ORION (Flag Capt. Back), H.M.S. AJAX (Capt. McCarthy) (of River Plate fame), HMS. PERTH (Capt Sir P. W. Bowyer-Smith) (of the Royal Australian Navy), H.M.S. GLOUCESTER (Flag Capt. Rowley) and sonte destroyers.
Italian-Three battleships (one of the LITTORIO class of 35,000 tons, and two of the CAVOUR class, of 24,000 tons), 11 cruisers and 14 destroyers. One of the battle- ships was the most powerful ship of the Italian Fleet.
The speed of the Italian ships was equal to that of the British whose cruisers were outnumbered by 11 to four.
