THE GERMAN MINISTER IN ATHENS HAS BEEN INSTRUCTED FROM BERLIN TO DEMAND HIS PASSPORT, STATES A MESSAGE FROM SYDNEY WHICH ADDS THAT THE CRISIS IN THE BALKANS IS EXPECTED TO BREAK IN ONE WEEK.

GERMAN TROOPS ARE NOW STANDING READY ON THE GREEK AND TURK- ISH FRONTIERS.

The crisis in the Balkans hangs on Yugoslavia and Turkey. Yugoslavia may succeed in remaining neutral, but to Turkey this will be impossible. Turkey, therefore, is reported to be taking steps to make Istanbul an open city.

Istanbul, the message states, has always been regarded as one of the main gate- ways between the West and the East.
