SECRET RENDEZVOUS WITH CONVOY IN MID-ATLANTIC
Canadian
LONDON, Mar, 5 (Render)—Thousands more troops have just landed in Britain after a trans-Atlantic voyage which again demonstrated the worldwide famed efficiency and power of the Royal Navy, writes Reuter's Special correspondent with the Home Fleet.
Several great liners. each estimated to have been carrying between 1,500 to 2,000 men, crossed this dangerous ocean with one of the strongest naval escorts yet provided for the convoy, such was Its importance.
Besides British ships, the esport included units of the Allied navies,
the Royal Canadian Navy and the
former American "destroyers. The
fact that no harm befell this
latest contribution to the Empire's fighting strength" from bombs, shells. torpedces ur mines was testimony to Britain's continued control of the Atlantic.
The entire operation was car- ried out with a remarkable split- second precision in accordance with a pre-arranged plan.
Neither snow, ice nor wind was allowed to interfere with it. More than once, snow and ice had to be cleared from the decks and guns.
We sailed from our British base jone night just after dark to meet the convoy in mid-Atlantic and escort it back to Britain. Our rendezvous was a pencilled dot on a chart, representing a vast panse of ocean, Almost at the minate the arranged convoy was sighted. It was a dramatic mo- ment-this secret meeting a the lonely Atlantic,
