H.K. RIFLEMEN TURN IN GOOD SCORES DESPITE ADVERSE WEATHER CONDITIONS
In spite of persistently bad weather the Hongkong Rifle Associa- tion braved the elements on Wednesday last and were able to hold quite a successful meeting.
The attendance was good for such a miserable day, 60 members turning up at the Ranges, heedless to the steady drizzle which fell while shooting was in progress at 580 yards.
#:
This was the first meeting at which the new system was adopted of mopping the firing point clear of all those not actually firing. It was found to be most effective and satisfactory ensuring that com petitors while firing need no longer experience the annoyance of be- ing trodden on by over eager spectators.
Shooting at 600 yards was most difficult as the targets were al-. most completely obscured by mist. but in spite of this some notable performances were achieved. Cpl. Ewens and Sjt. Russell scoring 30 each and Cpl. Langford obtaining 29 not to mention Mr. A. F. Evans, R.A.F. who having broken his spectacles at 500 yards also returned the high score of 29 at 600 yds. when shooting without them.
The successful competitors are as shown below:-
Class "A" Nett Spoon: Cpl. R. Langford, 1/Mdx. Regt.; Class "B" Nett Spoon: P.C. (R) S. T. Young, H.K.P.R.; Hcap. Spoon: Sjt. F. E. Russell, H.K.P.: Class "C" Nett Spoon: Lleut. G. C. Dawson, 1/Mdx. Catholics do not like it any more that soldiers like drill but it has to be endured for the same purpose, to become fit. The rigours of Lent have been greatly modified in recent years.. and they are now very slight in comparison w.th the former practice.
All that Lent demands in Hong“ kong is that those who are not
for any special reason granted an ST. JOHN'S exemption should" fast on every Friday and abstain from meat on Wednesday as well as Friday.
