least, should be, as I have started above, an able member of the Bar, and the Junior should likewise act Coroner in the cases of deceased Fremiers in the Yard.
The present conjunction of the Offices of Assistant Magistrate and Sheriff is not only inconvenient but illegal, and should forthwith cease. One of the principal members of the Community should, either by election or nomination, be required to act as Sheriff, as elsewhere, and I am inclined to adopt the suggestion of Mr. Bridges that the duties of the Marshal should be assigned to a Crown Solicitor, who shall also act as Coroner, and receive as Solicitor £200 a year, and as Coroner £100 a year. I object to the proposition that as Coroner he be paid by fees.
The important duties of Marshal of the Vice Admiralty Court might be handed over to the Registrar. The arrangement then to which I ask the sanction of Her Majesty's Government, and which may be carried out as occasion arises, follows:
Chief Justice _ £2010 per annum
Assistant Magistrate _ £1000 per annum
Junior Ditto _ £1000 per annum
Crown Solicitor _ £800 per annum
Marshal _ £600 per annum (proposed to be abolished or merged)
