1940 SEES RECORD RUBBER PRODUCTION

Consolidated figures of Malayan rubber exports for the whole of 1940 show that our rubber exports totalled 772,767 tons last year, the highest level ever recorded, it is believed. Last year's shipments ex- ceeded that of the previous year by 219,443 tons, says the Malaya Tribune.

The value of rubber exports for the first three quarters of 1940 (580.728 tons) amounted to about $529.33 million, and on this basis the total value of last year's ex-

ports must be well over 705 million

dollars.

་་

With good prospects for the in dustry, it may be expected that production may establish yet high er records this year.

That the remarkable. Increase in Malaya's exports last year is due mainly to the record shipments of rubber is shown by the fact that rubber accounts for nearly sixty per cent of the total value of our exports in 1940, which may work out at over $1,200 million.

SUSTAINED DEMAND

The sustained demand for rub ber and tin from the United States throughout the year was the main reason for the record turnover of our trade, leaving Malaya at the end of the year with an all-time record balance of trade in favour of Malaya of over 240 million dol lars.
