H.M.S. AJAX WINS FURTHER LAURELS IN
IN NAVAL ACTION OFF-SICILY MESSERSCHMITT Two Destroyers Sunk: Heavy Cruiser Put To Flight: Aerial Attack
LONDON, Oct, 16 (Renter)-The British light cruiser Ajax, of 7,000 tons, with eight 6-inch guns, sank twü Italian destroyers, crippled a third destroyer, and put the remainder of the Italian forces, including a heavy cruiser, to flight.
The Ajax was one of two light cruisers which, with the heavy cruiser Exeter, drove the German battleship Graf Spee Into Montevideo.
Describing the battle, which occurred last Saturday off Si- elly, the Admiralty states that during operatings in eastern and central Mediterranean, H.MS. Ajax made contact with three Italian destroyers of the 679-ton Airone Class about 80 miles south-east of Siefly on October 12.
