FORTY EUROPEAN WOMEN STORM Abuse TU.S. BRITISH SUBJECTS MAY BE COUNCIL CHAMBER: FIRST SITTING Hospitality OF EVACUATION ADVISORY COMMITTEE

Nine Appeals

Heard: One Granted

Some 40 European women residents of Hongkong, headed by MRS. C. E. CLARKE, of No. 17, Bomuntin Hill, Kowloon, stormed the Council Chamber, yesterday afternoon when the Evacuation Advisory Committee, consisting of MR. JUSTICE E. E. WILLIAMS (Chairman), MAJOR R. E. MOODY, MR. C. BLAKER and MR. C. BRAMALL BURGESS (Secretary), sat to hear nine appeals against evacuation orders issued to women and children residents of Hongkong.

The public gallery was a

buzz of chatter and excite-

ment, with more women than

assembled for the purpose of protesting against evacuation orders.

As soon as the Committee was in session, Mrs. Clarke stepped forward and, addressing the Chairman, said: "I would like to ask permission to be heard on be- half of 40 women assembled here to protest against being #va- cuated."

Mr. Justice Williams: We are not here to deal with any cases other than those already before us.

Mrs... Clarke: If you are not prepared to tear us, may wẹ know why not?

Mr. Justice Williams said that the Committee could not bear Mrs. Clarke as the spokesman for -herself and 40 others.and that they would have to make their appeals individually, and the cor- rect procedure would be for them to write in and ask for a hearing. Voice from the gallery: We are prepared to be heard individually. Mrs. Clarke:: We are prepared to be heard individually.

Mr. Justice Williams: But 1 cannot hear you now, You will have to write in to the secretary of the Committee.

Mrs. Clarke: I like to know whether you are refusing to hear
