WAR-TIME PRICE MOVEMENTS IN CANADA

The general level of wholesale prices in Canada advanced 11.4 per cent, between May 1939 and May 1940, the official in- dexes being 73.7 and 82,1 respectively on the basis of average prices in 19.6 being equal to 100. All of this increase has taken place since the outbreak of hostilities in September last.

During this latter period, wholesale price movements fell into "three distinct phases the Increases” which Immediately' followed the declaration of war; the reaction to the initial upbound, accompanied by declines in certain commodities; and the flue- tuating movement now in progress.
