Mr Merivale
There is no official record of any intimation to Mr. Hare that this situation in the Treasury of Hong Kong would be permanent - but he relied on it being so, when he accepted the place.
I know nothing about it as Private Secretary.
As this gentleman was appointed to a situation in the public Establishments in Hong Kong, some allowance for the loss of Office may be made.
Some remarks by Secretary his Ex. Grey acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 6th instant in which you state that when you accepted the appointment, it was understood to be permanent, and you request that some allowance for the loss of Office may be made.
