ROUTES TO FAR EAST

EFFECTS OF RECENT CHANGES

LONDON, May 9 (By Air Mal))- British liner companies received inquiries yesterday about the pos- sible effects of the diversion of passenger liners serving the East and Far East from the Mediter- ranean to the Cape route, if the. decisions taken to make the change.

The route from London to Bombay by the Cape route is about 5.000 miles longer than by Suez- about 11,000 miles against 8,000 mles and there is a difference of between 3,500 and 4,500 miles in favour of the Suez route to the Straits Settlements compared with the voyage by the Cape. "

The increased distance of the voyage to and from Australia via the Cape is only 300 or 400 miles compared with the Suez route. The exact difference depends on the Australian ports named. Some cargo vessels have long used the Cape route,

The effects of the greater dis- tances would be to reduce the number of voyages that could be made in the course of the year and so to lower the earning power of the ships.

PASSAGE RATES

As the passenger liner companies are now working on a scheme of.. requisitioning for the "Ministry of Shipping it would be for this De- partment to decide on any ad- vances, in passage rates which were considered necessary.

Increases in rates, of insurance for cargo on Mediterranean voy- ages are made in the advisory schedule of war risk' rates which is issued for the guidance of the

marine market. The increases are

to take effect today.
