Some thrilling racing marked the first day of the Hongkong Jockey Club's Whitsun Meeting yesterday, when a large crowd enjoyed a good afternoon's sport in typical summer Weather:
Highlight of the day was the lowering of the One Mile record for Austraitan ponies by Mrs. A. E. Grasett's Sapper who won the Whitsun Handicap in dashing style in 1 min. 42 3/5 secs. lowering by 1 3/5 secs, the previous record held by Strathroy,

Although the going was excellent, the times run in all the other races were slow, but there were many close and exciting finishes, and, except for three major upsets, dividends were moder- ale, Favourites were prominent in many of the finishes, however.
It was a day of long races, and it is noteworthy that the two best dividends were paid by the winners of the two sprint events over half- a-mile and 110 yards, West Lake paying $222.20 an winning the Arst section of the Shatin Handi- cap and Emergency Call $207.50 on winning the second section. The last race also provided, a sur- prise finish when Amber 11 flash- ed past the post first, to pay; $137.60..
Mr. Don Black was the most successful Jockey with three wins and a second while Mr. H. J. A. Hearne had one win" and three places. Messrs. Wood. Yeung Wing-kal. S. W. Pan, S. L. Sung and H. S, 'Chang rode a winner each.

The Dally Double paid $273,10 to each of 30 ticket-holders of the correct combination of Thirty- Six and Centre Court, Altogether -182 tickets were sold on the
Double Par-Mutuel.
The meeting opened with a mild upset when Gladiator won the first race to pay $28.50, the favourite Advancing Time "having failed completely.
