HOLD UP

Continued From Page 1

A representative of the Hong- kong Dally Press was on the scene, within a few minutes of the shoot- Ping, and, as far as he is able to gather, the robbery attempt was, staged by Shanghai, gangsters.

The man apparently lost his "nerve on being resisted, and fred at random in a desperate effort to escape capture-but he failed and is now in custody at the Central | Police Station.

This is how it happened.

One of the bullets caught Mr. Dubois in the abdomen and he felf bringing the intruder down as he did so. In the fall the would-be robber was injured by broken glass which was scattered all over the floor is a result of his wild shooting.

Bounding to his feet with the agility of a ent, and breaking away from Mr. Chan's grip, the man rushed out of the shop and down the street where he was chased and caught oy passers-by, led by a European civilian, who had been attracted to the scene. by the sound of the shooting.

In the man's pocket found the four diamond rings.

.In the meantime. the other bandit, who had been seen keep- Ing guard just outside, fled. Till late last night he had not been, arrested.

were

It is believed that he too. like his companion, is a Shanghai man. It will be recalled that some years ago a gang attempted to rob the Shanghai store of the same firm when a Russian watchman, who gave chase, was fatally shot.

The Police were soon on the scene yesterday.

Fragments of broken glass where everywhere, and one ballet hole through the glass on the Arcade side of the building. show- ed that a missle had sped right across the

passage where hun- dreds of persons must have been crossing at the time, but for- tunately without any harmful re- sults:...

GAPING HOLE

One showcase had a gaping hole more than a foot square; probably caused by a low flying shot which caught the glass at an angle..

It was near closing time, and Mr. S. W. Chan, an old and trusted as- sistant, was busy putting away a tray, full of diamond rings, when he suddenly felt the mizzle of a revolver digging into his ribs and almost simultaneously heard the crisp command, in perfect English. "Stick 'em Up."

Turning round, he was horrified to see a smartly-dressed Chinese, wearing European clothes, looking at him with hard, cold, piercing eyes as he mumbled through bla clenched teeth, "Keep silent, or I'll shoot." And the man, stretch- ing out his left hand, grabbed four rings from the tray, and sipped them into his pocket.

er

This was too much for Mr. Chan, Undismayed by the gun pointed at bis side, he shouted to his employ- Mr. Dubois, manager of" the firm, who happened to be at the other end of the room talking to G friend and compatriot. Calderara, promptly rushed up.

Mr.

TAKEN BY SURPRISE Taken completely by surprise by this unexpected turn, the bandit swung round and opened fire, al- legedly at Mr. Dubois, The sales assistant, grappled with him and, as Mr. Dubois closed in, the man continued firing till all six cham- *bers of his revolver were emptied. Mr. L. D. Walch, proprietor of the firm, interviewed by a Hong- kong Daily Press reporter said, “It is very unfortunate. Mr. Dubois was unarmed and he hadn't chance, It all happened so sud- denly.".

..

Questioned further he said that "Mr. Dhibo's” wie was sent for and she was there almost immediately.

At 7 p.m. yesterday it was learned that Mr. Dubois was very weak from the loss of blood and shock and although not unconscious, he was in a critical state. The report at midnight was that his condition was unchanged.

There was a large crowd at the scene until a late hour last night when a special guard was placed

over the store.

CLANDESTINE" COMMUNIST PROPAGANDA

In the same region 27 munich palities have been dissolved and 38 councillors deprived of office.

CABARET

SUCCESS

Over 300 persons attended the Russian Cabaret Dance organised by the Amateur Sporting Associa- tion at the Peninsula Hotel last. night. The function was an un- qualified success in every way.

Spice of the evening's enter- talament was supplied by Miss Fat Pasco who was applauded into an encore for a delightful version of the Gypsy dance, "The Two Guitars."

Another highly enjoyed cabaret item was Miss Lara Tesar's Boyar Dance which was very well re- ceived.

·R.A.F. DAMAGE · TRONDHEIM-

OSLO LINE

PARIS. May 2 (Reuter)-Con- siderable damage was done by the R. A. F. yesterday to the line link- ing Trondheim, and Oslo, accord- ing to military circles here,

Detailed indications of where the damage was inflicted are naturally withheld, but it is stressed that, even if the Germans succeeded in consolidating the link between Calo and Trondheim, railway communi- cation between the areas would be considerably impeded.

BREAK AT RENA

STOCKHOLM. May 1 (Reuter)- The reported breat in the German lines of communication which caused the withdrawal from Roeros is said to be a Rena which is far to the south and only about 10 miles north of Elverum.

Credence is lent to the report by the Norwegian claim that the Ger- mars are retiring up the road from Tynset to Kvikne.

CAR WINDOW SMASHED

While a car belonging to Capt. P. H. MacMillan, of the Royal Artillery, was parked in Victoria Road on Wednesday, some- one, smashed the rear window and stole a basket containing a 'mili- tary uniform and tollet requisites.

Later, the basket was discovered on the hillside nearby, and a check revealed that the only "article missing was à case containing shirt studs.-
