Concurring in the despatch, that a great demand has lately sprung up for building sites in the Town chiefly, as we understand from the letter, among the native population, but that the Surveyor General has been unable to meet the demand owing to the want of professional assistance in his Department. Under these circumstances he applied to the Lieutenant Governor, and the Lieutenant Governor with the consent of the Commanding Royal Engineer has appointed a Captain of that Corps to assist the Surveyor General at a remuneration of $4 a day.

We have the honor to report that it appears to us that the Lieutenant Governor acted wisely in removing an obstacle to the purchase of land by persons in the town and vicinity of Victoria, and that the remuneration proposed to the Captain is not unreasonable.

We have the honor to be,

Your obedient humble servants,

N. B. Kindersley

Alexander Gordon.
