"SAITO'S CRIME was that he exposed the thread- bare nature of the declared objectives of the Japanese militarists on the Continent, denied that these represented the real Interests of the people of Japan, and insisted on an explanation of what the campaign against China was really designed to achieve. It was a crime so serious that the extremists in the Diet, egged on by the mil- itary, demanded not only his expulsion, but the expulsion and punishment ** the Speaker who failed to stop him in time, the Secretary who entered his speech in the records, and a number of other legislators who at dif- ferent times had cast asper- sions on the good name of the armed forces.
