The American engines were considered by experts to be more suitable for the tfying condi- tions of the Empire routes than available in Immediately any Britari.
It would always have been difficult to get so large an order completed in this country in a short time, and had the contract been placed in Britain. its com- pletion would have been impossible without interference with nation-
ally important arms productions.

11,000 tons of onions had been im- ported into Australia' this season, a total larger than the Victorian 1939 Brown Spanish crop of about 10,000 tons, Mr. Harold Parke, merchant, stated recently,
About 6000 tons had come from Egypt, 4000 tons from New Zealand ind 1000 tons from Japan. There had also beers a small quantity of white onions from America.
These record importations, said Mr. Parke. had been satisfactory to consumers, as they had helped to relieve the shortage of onions in Australla this season, but from the growers' viewpoint they were not welcome as they had prevented the very small crop of Victorian onions from realising the full high market prices that would have ruled had no imports been made.
The peak price level touched in Melbourne market this season had been £30 a ton for a few days. $18.75 Without imports, prices would 50.00 almost certainly have been between Ps. 0.19 £40 and £50 a ton
